Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating Weblog

Mission To Improve

April 22, 2008 · 8 Comments

Thanks for the many affirmations.  We’re very glad to be helpful.  A few have written asking that we change our basic approach.  It’s heartbreaking to turn anyone down, but we simply can’t accommodate “convenience” changes.   Perhaps’ today’s answers to your continuing questions and comments will explain.

Why not allow customers to select their meals from a menu?

My mission is to improve people’s eating habits.  We can’t achieve this if we ask “what do you like and what don’t you like.”  People look to us to provide balanced, healthy, calorie-controlled meals.

Isn’t it now common knowledge that parents should serve their kids what they should eat?  It isn’t good to ask them which fast food place they’d like this morning, this afternoon, this evening.  Parents need to go back to serving their children healthy food they should eat.

Are Seattle Sutton’s meals okay for people who have gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis.  Those afflicted suffer sudden, severe bouts of pain.  The key is to reduce uric acid levels in the blood.

Our balanced, sensible meal program provides a healthy weight loss plan for those with gout.  Fasting, or severe dieting, on the other hand, raises uric acid levels and causes gout to worsen.  Healthy weight loss, which is us, is often indicated as a treatment for gout.

Eating our meals is a positive.  We do not provide high purine foods such as organ meats, anchovies, herring, and mackerel—all of which should be avoided by those on a gout diet.

Animal protein in a recommended gout diet is often limited to no more than five to six ounces of lean meat, poultry, or fish a day.  Our plan does not contain red meat, and servings of poultry and fish are limited to three to four ounce portions.

“I’m tired of eating the same meals.”

Ten times a year the same meal?  That’s too many?

We have 105 different meals served in a five week rotation—carefully analyzed and balanced—which means our customers eat the same meal only ten times a year.  Most people tell us they don’t have this low of a frequency when they’re on their own.

Many people state they will be on our meals the rest of their life.  We’ve received testimonials from people on our plan for more than ten years.

Why are the breakfasts so skimpy?

They really aren’t  You may not be “full,” and you might be a little hungry.  Being hungry is good for weight loss.   Remember, you have a choice between a 1,200 and 2,000 calorie-per-day plan.  Obviously the 2,000 calorie is almost twice as much of the same food.

Anyway, you may eat your meals whenever you want.  What matters is total calories per day.  If you wake up hungry, eat breakfast and part of your lunch.

Cannot stand tuna fish or other seafood.  Why not get rid of it?

Most of our clients enjoy our seafood.  People have different tastes.  However, medical science teaches us that people should eat fish twice a week.

Some people believe they don’t like fish, but when they taste the high quality of ours, they change their mind.

Cannot stand nuts!  Why not get rid of nuts?

Nuts are an excellent source of protein with literally no cholesterol.  They assist in the building of a well-balanced meal program.

Many nuts contain Omega-3, which has been known to fight heart disease.

How does one stop eating too much?

Portion control.  We do it for you.  That’s why almost everyone is satisfied while following our plan.  They’re happy because they can trust our calorie control.

I also recommend diversional activities.  Be creative.

If you feel you have a compulsive eating disorder, then you should seek professional assistance.

 Too many plums.

You think?  I don’t agree.  Perhaps one plum is too many for you.  Well, personal taste is important.  We serve a variety of fresh fruits, including strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, apples, oranges, kiwi, grapes, honeydew, and—of course—plums.

BTW, our fruit juices are one hundred percent fruit juice.  No added sugar.  No added high fructose corn syrup.  Very healthy choice.

I feel great when eating your food.
Two questions: Are your containers as “green-friendly” as is possible?
Do you have reheating suggestions when the same container has food that is served both hot and cold? Yesterday, I ate my pears first before heating the rest of the meal.
Don’t add more variety. My complaint is that the meals don’t repeat fast enough…I hate waiting 5 weeks for my favorite meals to come around again (Signature Pizza and Tuna Noodle Cassarole!). Thanks for the excellent food quality!

I am wondering if you have a cookbook of your recipes? I also wonder if you know if health insurance can help supplement the cost since I need to lose weight for my health? Finally, do you offer any specials or discounts on your plans?

Thanks for a great variety of food and for helping me lose 20 pounds already! I do have one comment - I understand that meat is an important component of a balanced diet. As a personal preference, though, I greatly prefer the meals that use ground meat vs. those that provide one big piece of meat. It seems to me that the meals using ground meat combined with other ingredients taste fresher and more flavorful. It may just be that the more meat looks like part of an animal, the less appetizing to me. :-) I really love things like the lemon pepper turkey loaf, and the meatballs, etc. Thanks for considering my comment.

Good Day Seattle! (if a may call you this):

I am so very glad and feel blessed to have experienced the benefits of your healthy eating program. It has literally changed my life!

From the age of 7 through my entire adult life, I had been overweight to morbidly obese. I have always struggled with my weight. I used to fault my parents and family members because as a child and early as a teen, I really I didn’t have a choice in what I ate and was never taught good eating habits or experience the benefits of regular excercise. Ineviteably, not only were the consequences of this not only physical, but emotional as well (painful!). My obesity opened the door for constant ridicules from peers, some family, which lead to self-consciencousness, that I sometimes even still struggle with has an adult, the affects were enormous. At different times in my life, like many others have experienced, my weight has gone up and down, like a see-saw ride, ending with more weight than when I started with after the next gain.

After years of debate and the weight roller coaster, I decided to pursue having gastric bypass surgery. To no avail, but truly a blessing, I was approved by the surgeon, but denied by my insurance company. I was so discouraged at first because at that time I knew that the surgery being used as a tool for weight loss was my ticket! I was mad because my employer had just recently changed our benefits package that excluded the procedures coverage contrary to it being included just 2months prior to me applying.

After that occurred, I was somewhat depressed, but still sought trying to get the surgery financed. The payback was unreasonable to me so I just said forget it. I told myself that I was just going to be fat and that was it. Forget the trying, I am tired of this being an issue and I was tried of being disappointed with my lack of success with it. After about 2years, I gained more that I ever have. I reached a wooping 313lbs and I could feel it. I was having troubles physically (too much to get into) and became scared. I did not want to have a stroke like my mom did at the age of 35 which left her to be disabled to this day and then have another mild one (TIA) some years later. And I certainly didn’t want to have a heart attack and die like my father did at age 52.

So one day, thanks be to God, I saw your commercial again. I had first saw your commercial when I was trying to get GB surgery and really didn’t investigate it that much because I assumed I needed more accountability and structure and assumed that it probably wouldn’t work for me anyway. I also thought that it would be out of my budget.

However, last June 2007, after realizing that I had to do something and truly wanting to do it naturally without surgery, I decided to give this weight loss, healthy lifestyle change one last try. I said in my mind that if this didn’t work, it would truly be it for me in making any effort. As I did the math before my first order, I amazingly realized that I would actually be saving more money on the program than what I was currently spending in fast-food bills, junk food and unhealthy market choices anyway. I was like WOW!! I CAN afford this.

Well, Seattle, I can happily say that within just 8 months I lost 105 lbs!!!. This was even through enduring the times of slipping up during the holiday season and during the monthly cycle cravings that happen to most women!

Everybody… and I mean everybody that knows me has been amazed with the results. Even people who don’t really know me (like at my job, church, etc) come up to me in amazement and curiosity as to how I did it and compliments.

Although I am still overweight and working toward losing at least another 50 lbs., I am tremedously pleased. I used to wear a size 24 and now I am in a 10/12. I am 5′10 tall and some say that I need to stop because I look great now and some say only a little bit more, however I want to get to a healthy BMI and tighten up and tone areas that still need improvement.

Although this email is long, I hope this encourages someone to hang in there because we can do it the right way, through health and wellness, which includes moving our bodies. So be encouraged. Things can and will change. I excersise and pray for strength and other things and people on a regular basis. It was essential for me and worked hand in hand. I started off with just riding a recumbent bike (sit down kind) for just 10 mins a day until I was able to do more. After awhile, you will automatically want and be able to do much more. I also took up a belly dancing class for variety that met once a week on Saturdays for about 3 months. (Note: there were all age groups in my class. Even a woman who was 82 who had never taken a dance class in her life. Some people were very obese and some were in shape and it was fun!)

Anyway, when your insides feel better because you are inputing wholesome good things, the body desires the same things: good oxygen and movement. That’s why we are born with them if feel. Exercise has actually help me stay on track because it helps me focus, feel better (mentally, spiritually, emotionally), look better (I’m Hot!) and forces me to realize that eating unhealthy is just not worth it! I can’t even eat the bad and be ok now, because when I tried after giving in to tempation, I felt horrible physically. My stomach ached and then I felt very, very sluggish!

I want to thank you Seattle and say God bless you and your family for dedicating yourselves to this because your program is second to none. It helped me learn portion control and gave me ideas on how to prepare my own food more healthy. It helped me realize that we don’t need all that food that the UPSIZE, Portions for 3-5 people, Fat-Sugary-Artery-Clogging, Toxic Ladden Industries is influencing us with. So kudos to you!!

P.S. The only thing I can say that became a challenge for me personally on the program is that after 8 months I started to have a desire for different food types. I began to get a little bored and lost excitement in the varieties offered. This may be because I get bored rather easily anyway with most things that stay the exact same after a long while unless it just has to. But it worked and your food taste great!!!! God Bless and sorry for the length.

I’ve in my fourth week and I’m loving the food. I appreciate that everything has a _taste_, not bland. However, I, too, am concerned about the packaging. As good as I feel with my new healthy eating, I’m feeling quite awful about the pile-up of non-recyclable containers going into my garbage. I know that a local grocery store is using metal containers that are microwaveable and recyclable for individual sized prepared dinners. I would endorse an alternative to current packaging. Thanks.

I understand your reasonings, but I disagree a bit. When people ask that their be substitutions, I don’t believe that they are wanting to eat pizza every day, or anything unhealthy. I do think having a few HEALTHY subs would be a wonderful thing. For instance-I hate sauerkraut. It is on next Mondays menu…no matter how healthy that meal might be, it is something that I don’t like, and will never like. I eat fish, chicken, and just about any fruit and vegetable that you could ever imagine-even starfruit and ugli fruit. However, I do not like the kraut, and I do not like pickles.

I agree that parents should give their children what they SHOULD eat. However, there is always going to be something that a person simply does not like…and never will. (I don’t mean the kind of people who don’t eat ANY vegetables… ;)

I have always wanted to do the SS plan, but because there are no substitutions, I don’t. I don’t want to pay for a meal that I won’t eat.

I have fibromyalgia and thyroid issues and eating healthy has really helped me feel better. Also even on the 2000 calorie plan I’m still losing weight. I’ve lost weight rapidly before (on Jenny Craig) and felt awful. So this time I’m taking things slow and my goal is more about felling better than losing weight–but its a great bonus.

Ericka - I just have to say WOW. What a story, thank you for sharing it. I too was on the verge of gastric bypass surgery but thought I would try this program as a last ditch effort. I am very happy with it so far and glad I decided to try it.

Congratulations on your success and thanks again for sharing - I could relate to a lot of your experiences and it is nice to know I am not alone in my struggles.
