Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating Weblog

A Personal Response

April 15, 2008 · 12 Comments

Hi!  Thanks for your many comments and questions.  It’s so important to me that people understand Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating program.  In my heart, I believe that when someone gets to know us, they get to love us.  It’s been proven many times.  Sometimes I forget we can only say so much in commercials.  And it costs so much money to advertise!

Hopefully, my blog (I like the sound of that, it seems so up-to-date) can be of assistance.  Many of your comments have been posted for all to read.  Some raised issues I wanted to answer personally.  Here goes:

Question: How does Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating compare to NutriSystem?

Well, I’m not going to comment on that company except to say that recently I saw one of their print ads with pictures of their meals featuring fresh fruits and vegetables.  So I called the number.  The person answering said that the items pictured were not included.  They had been placed in the ad because “people have that stuff around.”

Question: Why so much pasta? Why so much bread?

Most of our pasta and breads are made with whole grain, which is an essential nutrient containing fiber needed in a balanced, healthy diet.

Some people still have a fantasy that a low carbohydrate diet is healthy.  Wrong! They think they need protein to generate energy.  Wrong!  People get energy from carbs.

From the beginning, our meals have been, still are, and always will be well balanced.   As I predicted, the fad diet based on high protein and low carbohydrates came crashing down, the fate of all gimmick diets.

Once I was on a panel at a meeting of one thousand women.  A question came from the floor, “Are you ever going to offer a low-carb diet?”

My answer: “No, because if I did, I’d have to change our name from Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating to Seattle Sutton’s Unhealthy Eating.”

 Question: Why so much pepper?

We use a moderate amount of  pepper.  Our meals are sodium restricted, but we seek alternative sources of flavor.  People should learn to use seasonings other than salt.   Otherwise, meals can easily become too bland.  On our program, you can add non-sodium seasonings to your taste.

                                                          *     *     *     *     *

So many questions.  More answers later this week (and probably next week as well, judging from the pending comments).

I’ll close with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Hope you like it as much as I do.

“The value of skepticism is in its resistance to premature conclusions.  The proper ground of the skeptic is that of consideration…not of unbelief…nor universal doubting.”

About Nutrisystem and their comment that people “have that stuff around”. This is not only misleading as far healthy foods go, but their infomercials and ads make it sound like the program is so inexpensive. The cost only covers their foods (which you could store for several decades in your bomb shelter if need be), you still have to grocery shop for fruit, vegies, bread, milk or whatever. I think it’s very expensive, and I would hazard a guess that they don’t even count on repeat business, but make most of their money off of first time buyers.

I tried the Nutrisystem diet and quit after the first delivery. I was mislead by the beautiful pictures with all the fresh vegtables and was appalled by all the dried out and ugly looking “meals.” Thank you Seattle. You may be more expensive, but I don’t need to waste my time with frequent trips to the grocery store for fresh produce.

I lost over 100 pounds over 2 years using Seattle Sutton off and on. My Doctor recommended it and my husband was all for it because of Ron Santo. My blood tests at the Doctor were wonderful a short time after I began the program. Then I tried NutriSystem because of a MyPoints bonus and it was cheaper. NutriSystem tastes awful and you must add all the fresh fruits and vegetables yourself.

I would like to say that Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating is the only nutritional program that I have ever been able to stay on. The food is very flavorful and the variety makes it so that I never feel like I am missing out on anything! In fact, my husband often complains that I eat better than he does! Thanks a bunch, and keep up the great work.

I’ve been eating your foods for 1 1/2 years now and love almost all the menus. You said it above, calories in - calories out, can you elaborate on just how to get the calories out? I know exercise, but how much, how long? Walking won’t do it alone, bicycling? swimming? what? I eat 1200 calories a day… how much exercise do I need to be doing to get those calories out? Help me! (I know I’ve asked this before but I’d really like an answer if you could, thank you)

I have been eating Seattle Sutton for about 3 years (I think) and am so appreciative of the program. It was about portion control and convenience when I started but I have stayed with it for two reasons…one, I love the food and two, I dropped 22 pound and have kept it off through holidays, surgeries and all the other excuses I had for putting weight back on after loosing it. I was on Nutri System years ago Yuck! and I thought maybe it had gotten better because the ads do make it look so palatable. Sounds like, from the comments here, it is no different. Keep up the good work Seattle Sutton!! You have made my life easier and healthier!!

    To Cynthia Majestic…

Remember, a lot of your 1200 calories a day “in” are being burned off just by being alive! Check this site to calculate approximately how many calories you burn: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php

“BMR & RMR Calculator: Estimate your Basal and Resting Metabolic Rates, and how many calories you burn in a day based on a general activity level.”

I currently weigh 206 pounds and at my age and height, just getting out of bed everyday burns over 1650 calories! Add the the extra exercise I get by being more active and I am doing well. I spend 30 minutes of my one hour lunch taking a brisk walk, which adds around 120 more calories out.

You don’t have to start a complex fitness routine, just change your lifestyle to move more! That, combined with your healthier SS eating and you are on the right track.

I’ve tried them both. Nutrisystem is FAKE food. SSHE is real food. I’m 6′ - 240 lbs. and the 1200 calorie plan is plenty of food. I lost 20 lbs. in about 5 weeks. On Nutrisystem, I gained weight. The freeze-dried (or whatever it is) is just not fullilling enough and I would eat 2 helpings instead of one. Their pasta dishes weren’t too bad, but they still seemed fake. SSHE gives you a good variety of foods and I really think the portions are the key to success. Yes, they are healthy, but they are satisfying as well. You feel full when you eat a meal and you trust it because it’s real food.

Good Day, Seattle! I’ve had the honor and privilege of being a SSHE distributor some years ago and the distributors that continue on with this “good work” have added SSHE distributorships to other cities as well. In this shaky - more information that we want - and deception on the internet - it is so refreshing to see a company flourish with sound advice and principles being so successful. Seattle, you still warm my heart when I see your beautiful smile.
    Best wishes always,
    Sherry

Thank you for sticking to your principles and not letting the fads dictate what is healthy. It was a risk for you because, lets face it, you could have made a lot of money by changing your name to “Seattle Sutton’s Low Carb Eating” but you continued to stand by what you knew was right, that balanced eating is the best way to long term weight loss and good health. Keep doing what you’re doing Seattle!

I was not able to make it through one week on NutriSystem, the food was THAT bad! When you have to add water to a powder to get scrambled eggs, you know you’re in trouble. I have a hard time believing all those celebrity athletes lost weight on NutriSystem, because I believe they would find the meals even more intolerable than I.

I am on my second go ’round with SSHE and find that the food is quite palatable. The only thing I really don’t like is the flaked salmon (too fishy-tasting), but I always eat everything, even the few foods that I normally do not like and would never prepare for myself, because I know that they are part of a healthy diet.

I also spend less on a week of SSHE food than I would normally spend at the grocery store. I have to buy only milk, although I will frequently purchase additional fruit and veggies such as radishes and cucumbers, which SSHE does not include as part of their meals. I will also buy non-fat yogurt and frozen fruit which I will throw into the blender to make a healthy smoothie for the times when I need to satisfy a sweet/hunger craving, but for the most part, SSHE keeps me fulfilled.

I have to commend Seattle Sutton for the quality of meals you offer. I have many elderly clients who are homebound yet remain weight and health conscious. I have recommended your services to some and they rave about the food. Thank you for all you do for health and nutrition.

    All the best,
